Lake-side Addition

The addition, which involved a doubling of the original structure’s footprint, is sited to take advantage of lake views and to make a logical connection to the existing Ontario cottage. Among the objectives for the addition were: providing a new gathering space for the expanding family, creating additional bathrooms and sleeping quarters, and designing an outdoor deck with afternoon sun.

Design Challenge

To make the addition contemporary and economical, both in its detailing and method of construction, without sacrificing the integrity of the existing log cabin. The interior details are updated but continue the regional use of pine siding for the walls and cabinetry. Ship-lapped exterior siding replaces the cost-prohibitive log construction of the original, although the basic window type, exterior trim and stain are the same in the addition.
